Welcome to my world! Growing up in Winston Salem, NC, our home was filled with creativity & music. My father was a professional artist and my mother a professional singer. With arts in the gene pool, how could I possibly avoid the arts? Following formal art studies at Harding University and various jobs, I settled into the art of paper making, creating two & three-dimensional artworks, exhibiting throughout the United States and acquiring numerous awards along the way. During this time, I also designed handmade greeting cards that could be found at Neiman Marcus, Barney's, MOMA gift shop, as well as Paris, London, Tokyo, and Zurich. Years later, I became intrigued with Encaustic Painting which launched another phase of my art career. Charged by loud music in my sun-filled studio, I now engage in acrylic painting, oil painting and mixed media collage. I focus on abstracts and Divas. "A constant fire burns within, knowing I have not yet done all the work I want to do creatively!"
I live in North Carolina with my "Tar Heel" husband, Mike and our Standard Poodle, Annie.
My studio is my creative sanctuary. Upon entering my studio each morning,I have no preconceived idea of what the final artwork will become. I turn on the music, gather materials & select colors. I begin to feel the calm this preparatory ritual brings to me. As I make the beginning brush strokes, the work begins to speak to me...do this, do that ,choose this color or that & on & on. My extensive collection of collage materials often enters the picture. The personal story begins to take shape. The images become a dance, a movement in space. As the music plays, the art begins to have a rhythm all its own. Soon there is a dialogue between the work and myself as the painting evolves. These steps become a meditation of sorts. It feeds my soul. How lucky am I that the time in my studio is is so rich & satisfying? Equally fulfilling is when my artwork speaks to someone else. The meaning may leap forward or be quite subtle; it matters not, for in the process I am fed, & in viewing, others will bring to each work their own experiences & interpretations. Cheers to abstraction!
